Home

The primary goal of our after school activities program is to refine each child's skills as well as enhance self-esteem, self-control, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork. Classes can be 6 to 12 weeks in length and are taught by RGS teachers, parents, and community members. The program offers classes in sports, the arts, and academics.

Mondays
***Sound Meditation with Tibetan Bowls and Gongs
Instructor: Sui Ki Li

Description: Students will learn to play the gong and the Tibetan singing bowls individually and as a group. Students will develop listening skills and the ability to improvise with each other. This hands-on, interactive class will end on May 22 with a public performance to which parents and friends are invited.

Bio: Sui Ki Li is a recording artist, a certified energy healer, and a licensed substitute teacher in New Mexico. The healing sound practitioner has been playing his blend of cross-cultural, consciousness-raising music publicly in Santa Fe since 2009. Those who have heard him play describe their experiences as therapeutic and transforming.

 

Homework Club

Description: Do you like conducting experiments? Do you like electricity?  What do you know about circuits? Can you make a battery? We will explore the components of a circuit, make simple batteries, and create many different electrical arrangements. Bring your scientific curiosity, sense of adventure, and ingenuity and we will conduct investigations and create our own projects. We will make a variety of circuits, ranging from simple to complex, determine how to make the best simple batteries, and make sounds, light lights, run motors, and create awesome new inventions!

Bio: Ms. Gaddis is the Science Educator at Rio Grande School.

Description: Do you like to make maps of imaginary kingdoms? Mute your video games so you can narrate them? Keep a secret ninja name? Write letters to snowmen? Pause the TV show and change the ending? Take toys on volcano quests? Come write adventures with us! We'll explore fiction, poetry, plays, and songwriting. We'll collaborate, invent, connect, and read a few cool things along the way. Young writers will have an opportunity to develop self-expression, cherish imagination, and delight in language. Best of all, we'll do it an environment of encouragement and fun.

Bio: Mike Young is a published fiction writer, poet, and teacher. His books have been praised in Publishers Weekly, The Believer, BOMB, and more. He has a MFA from UMass Amherst, and he's taught K-6th grade through the Center for Talented Youth, Summer Institute for the Gifted, and Flying Object.

***Keep Tapping, Keep Dancing (Jazz/Tap Class)

Description: Dancers will develop their tap skills and work on time steps, shim sham, and soft shoe steps. We will also begin each class with a jazz warm up and across-the-floor and basic jazz steps. We will have a final demo class for parents.

Bios: Ms. Orozco-Garrett has been teaching dance in Santa Fe area for more than 15 years. She currently teaches at Moving Arts Española, Pandemonium Productions, and Santa Fe Dance Works/Casablanca Dance Studio opening in April 2017.

Description: Have an opportunity to practice your reading or pre-reading skills with certified therapy dogs in this unique and fun class. Ms. Jeannette and Ms. Linda will bring their dogs, Chippy and Papaya, for individual turns at snuggles and reading pleasure! Ms. Steinman will lead the group in reading activities and choices of books to share with Chippy and Papaya.

Bios: Ms. Steinman has been the RGS librarian for more than 20 years. Ms. Jeannette is a Santa Fe veterinarian and a RGS parent. Ms. Linda is an RGS alumna parent and a volunteer for the Santa Fe Animal Shelter Pet Outreach Program.

 
***The Magic of Go
Instructor: Robert Cordingley

Description: The game of Go provides an extraordinary opportunity to develop essential thinking skills in students. It offers an intriguing way to teach the Four Cs: Critical Thinking, Competition, Cooperation, Communication. Various academic studies have shown that playing Go changes the structure of the brain to improve such areas as attention control, working memory, and problem-solving. Go is a game of strategy and unexpected complexity using simple lines and circles. Two players alternately place stones on a rectangular grid with the goal of building territory. The resulting patterns of black and white stones develop their own power, strength, and influence--often in beautiful ways.

Bio: Robert Cordingley, Sensei, has been an avid Go player for much of his life, learning from Western and Asian teachers. He has taught Go to children and adults and developed the Magic of Go class based on topics students should master early. Robert is a member of the American Go Association and author of the GoClubsOnline internet software package (goclubs.org). He has run many Go tournaments and worked as a club organizer for several decades. He currently serves on the leadership team of the Santa Fe Go Club.

Course Description: Tennis is a game for life! This course will teach the basic fundamentals of tennis and will promote a love of the game with the goal of having a positive impact on player self-esteem. Participants need to bring a tennis racquet, tennis shoes, sunscreen, and water.

Origami Club

Description: Do you love origami? Join Ms. Merritt to practice the art of folding paper. We will learn about the history of origami and storytelling. We will transform two-dimensional paper into beautiful three-dimensional forms as well as basic folds and origami language.


Bio: Melissa Merritt studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she received a B.F.A. in Illustration and an A.A.S. in Jewelry Design. She completed her art specialist certification at Parsons School of Design, New School University, and completed her M.A. in Art and Art Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Melissa is the Visual Arts educator at Rio Grande School.


***Arts and Yoga!

Description: Explore movement through shapes, right side up and upside down, vertical, horizontal, and all other combinations. We will co-create a series or two of yoga postures, and work with breath and mindfulness activities. Art projects in 2-D and 3-D, writing, and drama will each play a part outside when warm!

Bio: Ms. Green, RGS first grade educator, is a certified yoga instructor who teaches teachers on Wednesdays and kids on Thursdays! She loves working with students in the arts.

Description: Do you want to know what your computer's thinking? Do you like to learn how things work? Then you'll love coding! The field of computer science is a huge part of our lives: computer scientists design and write the programs that run games, apps, websites, and more. But anyone can learn to code! In this class, we'll start with the fundamentals of coding and design solutions to problems. As you learn more, you'll begin creating your own websites, games, and more, coding with creativity and collaboration. In class, we will primarily use https://code.org, which uses a visual programming language called blockly. Students sign up for free non-email based accounts that save their work and make it accessible anywhere.

Bio: Mike Young is a writer, teacher, and instructional designer who's designed and coded online classes, web sites for magazines, multimedia games, and more.

***Ooey Gooey Creative Creations

Description: Come and make some gooey items, including grass and dirt ice cream, day glow Gak, playdough topographic maps,ancient muddy fossil dirt balls, and some surprise of course !

Bio: Ms. Cottle is the RGS Learning Support Coordinator and an educator at RGS for 18 years.  

***Spanish Fitness and Cuisine

Description: Come have fun getting in good shape and cooking healthy traditional Hispanic dishes. Students will exercise with the Five-a-Day British TV program, learning body parts and action words. And while cooking, they will learn about vegetables, fruits, measuring, and cooking vocabulary.  

Bio: Señora Byrd is an experienced Spanish language teacher. She comes from Mexico and loves to share her passion for the people, language, culture, and traditions.
