The Tuition Assistance program at Rio Grande School is an important feature of the school’s strategic effort to make the private education costs manageable for families who might otherwise not be able to afford the tuition.
In the 2016-2017 school year, more than $400,000 in tuition assistance was awarded to 27% of our students or 41 students.
In the 2017-2018 school year, more than $500,000 in tuition assistance was awarded to 30% of our students or 43 students. Tuition assistance is awarded to families who have demonstrated financial need. Grants range from 10% to 90% of the cost of tuition.
Tuition assistance is awarded based on a family’s ability to pay, and is not a loan. Families are required to re-apply for assistance each year to determine eligibility, and awards continue year after year based on eligibility. Once a family has determined that they would like to apply for admission to Rio Grande School for their child(ren), they are encouraged to begin the separate process of applying for tuition assistance concurrently. Please note that Rio Grande School cannot offer tuition assistance awards to families whose children have not applied and been accepted to the School.

To determine eligibility, Rio Grande School requires that families complete the following actions:
Current family deadline: Friday, February 2, 2018
Prospective family deadline: Friday, February 9, 2018
1. Complete the Tuition Assistance data form, personal statement, and agreement (download here) and return to the Director of Finance and Operations, Rich Virgin.
2. Each parent or legal guardian completes the financial profile submitted through School and Student Services http://sss.force.com/familyportal, a third-party organization that analyzes financial data, yielding an estimate for what families can afford. Rio Grande School's code is 6038. A $47.00 non-refundable fee must be paid to SSS for your profile to be processed and sent to Rio Grande School.
3. Submit two years of joint or separate individual Federal income tax returns to Rich Virgin, Director of Finance and Operations.
Current family deadline: Submit 2016 tax returns by Friday, February 2, 2018 and your 2017 tax returns no later than April 17, 2018.
Prospective family deadline: Submit 2016 tax returns by Friday, February 9, 2018 and your 2017 tax returns no later than April 17, 2018.
The Tuition Assistance committee meets after academic admission decisions have been made (Tuesday, Feb 8, 2018 meeting for current family applications; Wednesday, Feb 14, 2018 meeting for prospective family applications). Please note that Rio Grande School cannot offer tuition assistance awards to families whose children have not applied and been accepted to the School. The committee considers the SSS estimates and makes a confidential award recommendation. While requests for tuition assistance from current and prospective families will be considered after February 9, 2018, be aware that the pool of assistance may be depleted.
